A much a discussed and somewhat controversial ruling made by the government of New South Wales in September 2017 decreed that government agencies must no longer use their existing logos. Instead, all state government agencies and bodies must use only the NSW Government’s waratah logo. Under the new scheme, many programs and agencies were forced to lose the logos which they’d used for years, and with that potentially give up a large part of their brand equity. ‘Heritage Near Me’ is a program of the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage that that empowers NSW communities to protect, share and celebrate their local heritage. We worked with Heritage Near Me to completely refresh their brand to deliver more depth and storytelling with the visual identity.

Our brand concept ‘layering stories’ creates a visual metaphor for the experience of uncovering the multi-layered history of heritage. The visual identity uses layered graphic devices that suggest torn layers of paper to build up designs and layouts. We combined this with a new colour palette that allowed Heritage Near Me to produce branded communications in which the notion of heritage feels relevant and contemporary. Whilst their logo was lost, coming up with a flexible brand system that could be used across all communication touch points allowed us to give Heritage Near Me a more recognisable visual identity previous to the NSW Government brand guidelines shakeup.
